In Africa, WHA’s Shelter Assistance Program has changed lives. After the devastating cyclones that hit Mozambique in 2022, we provided emergency shelter kits to over 50,000 families. These kits, equipped with tarps, ropes, and tools, offered immediate relief, but our work didn’t stop there. Recognizing the need for sustainable solutions, we initiated a reconstruction project, helping 20,000 families rebuild their homes using local resources and disaster-resilient techniques.

Similarly, in conflict-affected areas of Syria and Yemen, WHA has been a beacon of hope. Our teams have rehabilitated more than 15,000 homes, providing a sense of security and normalcy to families living in uncertainty. 

Our shelter projects also extend to areas affected by natural disasters in Asia. In response to the 2023 earthquakes in Indonesia, WHA worked tirelessly to construct 10,000 transitional shelters within six months, benefitting over 50,000 individuals.

At the heart of WHA’s shelter initiatives is the drive to empower communities. We don’t just build houses; we build capacities. In all our projects, we involve the local community, providing them with skills and knowledge that can be applied long after our work is complete.

From emergency responses to long-term solutions, WHA’s shelter initiatives encompass the true essence of our mission: to empower humanity together. By providing safe, secure, and sustainable shelters, we are contributing to the building of resilient communities worldwide, one home at a time.

At WHA, our belief is rooted in the transformative power of safe and secure shelters. We understand that each house we help to build or repair does more than merely provide a roof over someone’s head. It provides a foundation for families to rebuild their lives, fosters community cohesion, and contributes to the overall recovery of communities shattered by conflicts and natural disasters.

In South Sudan, a nation riddled with internal conflict, WHA has made remarkable strides. Our Shelter Reinforcement Program has ensured that over 30,000 displaced individuals have secure, weatherproof shelters, ready to withstand the harsh rainy seasons. Each shelter is a sanctuary, a place for families to begin healing and rebuilding their lives.

We’ve also made a significant impact in regions affected by climate change. After the floods in Bangladesh in 2023, WHA quickly deployed teams to construct 5,000 flood-resistant homes, integrating local building techniques with innovative designs. This unique approach has not only provided immediate shelter but also safeguarded communities from future disasters.

Furthermore, WHA’s shelter initiatives extend beyond just physical construction. We champion for the right to adequate shelter in international forums, advocating for policy changes to address the shelter needs of those most vulnerable.

Moreover, our work empowers communities by offering training programs in construction and maintenance, enabling self-sufficiency. Thousands have been trained, equipping them with skills to build resilient homes and enabling them to earn a living.
